PHOENIX, Ariz. -- The U.S. Marshals Service is investigating threats made against the federal court judge who put a temporary hold on key parts of Arizona's controversial new immigration law.

David Gonzales, who is the U.S. marshal for Arizona, tells CBS 5 that Bolton's office has received thousands of communications over the past 24 hours. Gonzales says many of those messages have been positive, but some contained "sick and perverted" content. He says those are the communications his office is investigating.

Gonzales' office is in charge of protecting federal judges. He would not go into detail about the nature of the threats, or what his office is doing to ensure Bolton's safety.

Threats against federal judges have increased 300 percent in the past six years in Arizona alone, according to the Marshals office.
