Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones has been appointed to the National Sheriff Association's Congressional Affairs Committee on Immigration.

Jones and about a dozen other sheriffs, mostly from border states, met last week with Homeland Security officials.

Jones already serves on two other National Sheriffs Association committees, the drug enforcement committee and the court security/prisoner transportation committee.

Jones has been outspoken on immigration issues and has even tried billing the government for housing illegal immigrants.

This sounds encouraging. Sheriff Jones is one of the good guys.

    Sheriff appointed to immigration panel
    BY JANICE MORSE | JMORSE@ENQUIRER.COM
HAMILTON - His county is far from the Mexico border, but Butler County Sheriff Rick Jones was appointed to join a group to fight illegal immigration at the national level.

Jones is among about a dozen sheriffs - mostly from communities near the Mexico border - who met with top immigration officials in Washington last week, his office announced Monday.

The National Sheriff's Association appointed Jones and the others to the group's Congressional Affairs Committee on Immigration.

The group unanimously called for "immediate control of the nation's borders," and a slowdown or moratorium on new citizenship approvals "while the government gets a handle on the illegal immigrant problem," the sheriff's office said in a news release.

Further, the committee decried lack of federal money to pay for incarceration of illegal immigrants and insufficient staffing for federal immigration agents.

"Our committee has the feeling that Congress probably cannot legislate their way out of this mess. No matter what else they may try to do, the first step should be to make sure that laws already on the books are enforced," Jones said.

    How true and how simple!

    Enforce the existing laws

The best: Congress probably cannot legislate their way out of this mess
they should be hanging their heads in utter embarrassment but I guess that would actually take a conscience.
