SUGAR LAND, Texas - Sugar Land police say that 14 people who were seen allegedly hiding beneath a tarp on the bed of a pickup truck are most likely illegal immigrants.

The Rosenberg Police Department were first contacted by a driver who said that he saw several people underneath the tarp.

Sugar Land police found the truck on U.S. Highway 59, the Southwest Freeway, near U.S. Highway 90A and tried to stop the driver for a traffic violation after 11:30 a.m. Wednesday. The driver did not stop the truck and crashed it into another vehicle.

The people inside the bed of the truck ran away from the accident site, but Stafford and Sugar Land officers chased after the group on foot.

Police apprehended the driver and 14 passengers. Officers contacted U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which will take the alleged illegal immigrants into custody.

The immigration status of the driver has not been determined.
