A federal immigration enforcement agent shot at a suspect driving a pickup truck who apparently tried to run over the officer during a chase earlier this week in southwest Houston.

The driver, 23, and the officer were not injured, according to Houston police. Their names have not been released.

Officers later found a large amount of marijuana in the bed of the pickup.

Houston police arrested the driver on a charge of felony evading arrest with a motor vehicle.

Houston police said the shooting happened in the 10700 block of West Bellfort about 10:15 p.m. on Tuesday.

Houston police said agents with the Department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement were following the pickup as part of a surveillance operation. Details of the operation were not disclosed.

The agents asked Houston police officers to stop the pickup for a traffic violation.

When officers tried stopped the truck, the driver sped away and the officers and agents followed.

At some point, the driver attempted to run down the agent, who feared for his life and fired at least one shot at the man, police said. The suspect was not hit.

Houston police later stopped the suspect. Officers searching the pickup said they found marijuana in it.
