PHOENIX - An Arizona legislative committee postponed a vote on a proposed challenge to automatic U.S. citizenship for children of illegal immigrants.

The Senate's appropriations committee had been scheduled to hear the proposal Tuesday.

But it was removed from the agenda so that lawmakers can consider legislation for a special legislative session devoted to economic development.

Lawmakers say the measure will be considered next week by the appropriations committee. That panel typically meets on Tuesdays.

Supporters of the idea say guaranteed citizenship results in taxpayers covering the costs of services provided to illegal immigrants and their children.

Opponents say the move would be declared unconstitutional.
