La Joya police pick up 10 immigrants, alleged smuggler

LA JOYA -- Police chased an SUV filled with undocumented immigrants for about five blocks after the vehicle allegedly ran a red light Thursday morning.

The pursuit started about 8:32 a.m. near the intersection of Leo Avenue and U.S. 83 in La Joya, said Officer Joe Cantu, a La Joya police spokesman.

Officers said the driver of the 1997 Ford Expedition had run a red light along the highway and continued east for about five blocks before he finally pulled over.

During the traffic stop, the La Joya police officer found 10 Mexican nationals from Guanajuato state on the back seat and the cargo area of the SUV.

The driver and his passenger -- both males -- could face federal charges for human smuggling. The 10 immigrants were turned over to the U.S. Border Patrol, as well as the SUV driver and his passneger.

"Hopefully the federal government will prosecute them for transporting human cargo," Cantu said.
