Jersey City authorities raided two homes and found 60 beds and 30 Chinese immigrants who were reportedly padlocked at night into what authorities referred to as a "firetrap," as reported by The Jersey Journal.

After an early morning raid of a two-family home at 354 Wayne St., authorities found the immigrants - who are believed to be in the country legally - and and questioned them with the help of a translator, the Journal reports.

The immigrants told city officials that their passports were being withheld from them, said sources.

Authorities were told the men work for a construction company operated by the Chinese Consuate in New York.

The investigation is ongoing.
