(WUSA) -- They've tried it before. Now they are trying again. Prince George's County and District police officials met Wednesday to firm up a new commitment to combat criminals who cross the border.

Prince George's County Police Chief Melvin High and DC Police Chief Cathy Lanier were joined by their top staff and the FBI to outline the plan. It calls for putting resources back to border patrols, where officers from both jurisdictions team together. That effort began in September of 2005.

Chief High says it started off very well, but that the staffing wasn't provided on a consistent basis.

The two police chiefs and Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI's Washington Field Office, Joseph Persichini, Jr., also promised joint strategy meetings and new efforts to combat auto thefts.
