AZ: Immigration debate changes job market

    Immigration debate changes job market

TUCSON - SB 1070, the state's law targeting illegal immigration may not have all the parts it originally had in it, but many believe the controversy surrounding it has changed the job market.

The crack down on Arizona employers hiring illegal immigrants started back in 2008 with the Legal Arizona Workers Act, but with the controversy surrounding SB 1070, some believe employers aren't just watching who they hire; they're getting rid of some they already have.

Jayne Henninger at Remedy Intelligent Staffing said that's keeping her busy because it's her job to help fill those positions. She said, "We keep in contact with all of our clients and they have said in many cases the reason they have got the job was companies becoming stricter and doing everything properly."

Henninger said she placed at least 30 people into new jobs recently, all because of illegal immigrants being let go.

She said, "People are realizing this is the law and this is the way it should be. We should be putting documented people on jobs and they should be paying taxes so I am thrilled to death."

But not all job placement agencies are seeing this trend.

Jim Mize with the Pima County ONESTOP Career Center said, "I have not seen any evidence of that at all. I even checked with the other center to see if it's something they had heard or seen. I have not heard that or seen it quite frankly."

Even though the Pima County ONESTOP hasn't seen the evidence, some of its clients say otherwise.

Robert Zepeda is out of work and trying to find a job through the Pima County ONESTOP. We asked him if employers are laying off people because they are undocumented. He said, "Yes. Absolutely."

But he added that doesn't always turn into jobs for him and everyone else. He said, "It's making it complicated because a lot of those jobs we don't have the skills to fill them. That's what I know and what I've seen so far.

E-Verify is one method employers are using to check workers' immigration status. The federal government said nationwide, one thousand more employers start using it a week. Here in Arizona, more than 3-thousand employers have signed up in the past year.
