Immigration officers arrest four 'illegal' roofers in Buffalo

Officers from the Springfield Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) division apprehended four suspected Mexican illegal aliens in Buffalo on Friday, April 25. The four were members of a crew from Taylor Made Roofing of Springfield that were working to repair a roof at the home of Jerry Cantlon, 28 North Fir. Cantlon's roof was one of many that was damaged by the March 31 tornado.


Mike Spinella, resident agent in charge, said he received a call from the Dallas County Sheriff's Department on Wednesday, April 23 regarding a number of possible illegal aliens working on the roof of a Buffalo residence. Sheriff's deputies helped with the arrests. The four illegal aliens were transported to the ICE RAC Springfield office where they were processed for removal from the United States. As of Monday the four remained in ICE custody pending an appearance before an immigration judge.

Spinella said ICE policy does not allow him to release the names of the aliens apprehended prior to their appearance before the immigration judge. Upon review of the files, Spinella said he found out that all four aliens entered the U.S. without inspection.

Spinella emphasized that since the ice storm of 2007 and other storms hit in southwest Missouri, there have been a lot of transient roofing crews.

"We get complaints from people all the time in the 20 counties that we cover," Spinella said. "People call in and make referrals, especially in Springfield, Carthage and Joplin. This is all an everyday occurrence to us."

He emphasized that the agency, which is a division of Homeland Security, can't respond to every call. Response depends on manpower availability at the time and the perceived seriousness of the situation. If health and safety are involved, the call rises on the priority list.
