A Pierce County man who has illegally re-entered the United States four times after being deported was sentenced Wednesday to seven years in prison.

A jury convicted Bernardino Ramirez-Santos, a 42-year-old citizen of Mexico, in July.

Federal prosecutors say he has been deported four times and prosecuted twice for illegally returning.

Since illegally entering the country in 1989, Special Assistant U.S. Attorney John Odell said, Ramirez-Santos has been sentenced to more than 24 years in prison for various crimes. His convictions span two decades and include a slew of drug charges.

Most recently, Ramirez-Santos was being held in the Pierce County Jail for criminal trespassing when U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents discovered his whereabouts and took custody of him.
