A 2-year-old boy is in critical condition after being abused at a Phoenix apartment on Wednesday.

Police arrived at a local hospital after the unconscious child was brought in at 1 a.m. by his mother and her boyfriend, 32-year-old Rosario Fierro-Lopez.

The boy reportedly had ruptures to his intestines, which could only be caused by blunt force trauma.

Reports indicate the boy had a broken arm, numerous bruises, scratches on his back, and severe burns and blisters on his hands.

The mother and Fierro-Lopez initially told police they had no idea how he was injured.

Fierro-Lopez, who is reportedly in the country illegally, later admitted that he struck the boy in his stomach with a closed fist two times on Tuesday when he became frustrated with his crying, according to officials.

The mother later told police she was at work when the incident occurred.

Police say Fierro-Lopez was charged with one count of child abuse.

The family reportedly has a history with Child Protective Services.
