A bill that would suspend licenses for businesses that knowingly employ illegal immigrants will not get a committee hearing in the Idaho Senate.

Sen. Mike Jorgensen, R-Hayden Lake, proposed the bill, which was printed Monday morning. But Senate state affairs chairman Curt McKenzie will not put the bill on his committee’s agenda.

It is the chairman’s discretion as to what proposed legislation goes on the agenda.

“There’s considerable concern among the agricultural community as well as business groups about the level of the penalties that could be put against a business,â€

Sen. Mike Jorgenson, R-Hayden Lake, proposes legislation to crack down on employers who hire illegal aliens, 3/16/09

BOISE - North Idaho Sen. Mike Jorgenson proposed far-reaching legislation to punish Idaho employers who hire illegal immigrants on Monday, but just hours after the bill had been introduced, it died without a hearing.

Jorgenson said Monday afternoon that the Senate State Affairs Committee chairman, Sen. Curt McKenzie, R-Nampa, had informed him the bill wouldn’t be scheduled for a hearing in the committee, which means it’s dead.

“I’m sorry that he’s caved in to Idaho dairymen and agricultural interests,â€

[quote]Olmstead, the dairy lobbyist, said Jorgenson’s bill was “the wrong approach for the state of Idaho to take, to go for a punishment rather than a fix. The demand for the labor is there. You’re not going to get an unemployed high-tech worker from Boise to move to Shelley, Idaho to sort potatoes in a warehouse.â€

The Statesman thought they were being cute by deleted the other story they put in yesterday, and replacing it with this puny report.

AP State > IdahoIdaho lawmaker targets employers who hire illegals

    The Associated Press
    Published: 03/16/09

BOISE, Idaho — A northern Idaho Republican wants to crack down on employers who hire illegal immigrants.

Sen. Mike Jorgenson will face a tough fight to get his measure out of the Senate State Affairs Committee, whose members grilled him Monday over his plan to suspend business licenses of violators, in some cases indefinitely.

Sen. Kate Kelly, a Boise Democrat, told him she was concerned about violating business owners' due-process rights.

Jorgenson, from Hayden, says taxpayers face millions in costs from illegal immigrants, including those in prison.

He'd require Idaho employers to use the federal "E-Verify" system, similar to requirements in a 2007 Arizona law.

Idaho cities that balk at provisions in Jorgenson's bill, should it become law, couldn't get state grants.

The Senate panel agreed to a full hearing.

    Tiny!

I just went to tie these articles into ALIPAC's Focus campaign for Idaho where our national supporters are asked to monitor and assist.

THERE IS NO 2009 FOCUS CAMPAIGN For Idaho!!!!
    http://www.alipac.us/forum-24.html

This is a major slip. You are a moderator Tiny and I'm pretty shocked that there is no FOCUS Campaign setup for Idaho in the appropriate area.

Please get together with our state Focus Campaign team of Dixie, Sosad, and Jean and get a 2009 sticky up for Idaho as soon as possible.

We were waiting for Jorgenson's bill to get introduced to get Idaho going, and we just recently got the bill. But it's a pdf and nobody seems to know how to copy it. Any suggestions?

There is no 2009 Idaho focus campaign because we have no legislation to add for 2009...we have only been updating states who have introduced bills and ones that have a bill # there has been no other immigration legislation in Idaho... but I will bring Idaho up to 2009

This bill has no number that we know of, it passed state affairs committee unanimously and Sen. Mckenzie the chairman supposedly threw it in his desk drawer and said this bill is not going anywhere, so what we have is a bill he refuses to move in the normal process and has no bill number, I am not even sure it has actually been printed..

We need to force him to bring this bill out of his desk drawer give it a number and get it going through the normal process before the session ends April 2nd

I have an html copy of Jorgenson's bill that he sent me in December, but he's made some changes since then, so I don't know if it has the same number.
