GLOUCESTER -- A state police officer was injured on Sunday in Gloucester when he was hit head-on by a suspected drunken driver who also is believed to be an illegal immigrant.

State trooper Maxwell Williamson was treated for neck injuries and released on Monday. Alfonso Maldonado is being held in the Gloucester County Jail on charges of driving under the influence and driving without a license.

Local TV station WAVY-TV reports that Maldonado was found to be in the country illegally and that the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency has put a detainer on him and plans to begin deportation hearings.

According to state police reports, Williamson was on Route 17 on Sunday afternoon responding to a call about a suspected drunken motorist who was driving erratically. Just north of Route 628, the report said, Williamson spotted Maldonado's car driving in the wrong direction. The two cars collided head-on.

Both men were treated at a local hospital and released.
