The gunman who killed a 32-year-old man late Friday outside his mobile home tried to rob his victim hours before, police said.

"The suspect approached him once before and threatened him. He returned later and shot him" to death, said Jackson police spokesman Lt. Jeffery Scott.

Juan Miguel Cisneros Huerta, a Mexican immigrant living at Shady Creek Mobile Home Park in south Jackson, was pronounced dead at the park on the east side of I-55, between the Savannah and Elton road exits, police said.

Huerta didn't call police after the robbery attempt, and that may have cost him his life, Scott said.

Police are searching for a man in his late teens or early 20s who "frequents" the park, Scott said.

The suspect's name was not released.

Huerta was shot several times around 10 p.m. as he and friends gathered outside the residence, Scott said.

Hinds County Coroner Sharon Grisham-Stewart said Huerta was shot in the back, arm and leg with a handgun .

In both run-ins, witnesses said the shooter demanded money from Huerta, Scott said. It was unclear whether any money was taken.

Roberto Parces, who said he was Huerta's friend, said the suspect beat Huerta with the handgun earlier. He said several residents identified the suspect as a man who grew up in the mobile home park.

Scott would not confirm Parces' claim, but said police have an idea who the suspect is.

Parces said Huerta leaves behind two children and a pregnant wife who live in Mexico.

Huerta had lived in Jackson for about a month and supported his family by working as a carpenter, Parces said. "The only problem now is we don't have enough money to send his body back home," he said. "We're going to have to find a way to raise money for him and his wife, but right now, we have nothing."

Huerta is Jackson's 18th homicide victim this year. There were 24 homicides at this time in 2008.

I think you're kidding, but for anyone who may think you're not:

"In both run-ins, witnesses said the shooter demanded money from Huerta, Scott said. It was unclear whether any money was taken."

Obviously the victim owed the suspected killer money.
