SAN DIEGO — Federal authorities seized nearly 10,000 pounds of marijuana hidden in truck shipments at the Tecate and Otay Mesa cargo ports this week, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
On Wednesday, nearly 4,900 pounds of pot were discovered hidden among pallets of beach pebbles at the Tecate crossing.
A few hours later at the Otay Mesa facility, a customs dog alerted on a tractor-trailer hauling yellow peppers. Forty-nine packages of marijuana totaling 304 pounds were found.
On Thursday evening, officers at Otay Mesa found a cellophane-wrapped package in a box amid a shipment of cilantro, chives and mint. The bundle turned out to be 4,200 pounds of marijuana.
The three seizures had an estimated total street value of about $6 million.
The drivers, who are Mexican citizens, were arrested.
