President Calderón Meets with Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger

Wednesday, February 13 | Press Release

Sacramento, California

During the meeting, the President invited Governor Schwarzenegger to continue their collaboration in issues on the common agenda, and stressed the need to promote migrants’ well-being and integration into California society, as well as to reinforce trade and infrastructure on the border to facilitate safe, legal crossing for the region’s development.

President Felipe Calderón thanked Governor Schwarzenegger for his support of an integral migratory reform and his view that there are alternatives other than the construction of a border wall.

The President also thanked him for the Government of California’s support of those affected by the rains in Tabasco and Chiapas.

At the end of the meeting, the President and the Governor of California witnessed the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding in Environmental Cooperation, which will facilitate coordination regarding the management, research and development of environmental skills in the border region. This is part of the effort to reverse climate change, improve air quality and preserve the environment.

The agreement was signed by Secretary of the Environment and Natural Resources Juan Rafael Elvira Quesada and, on the part of the State of California, by Environmental Protection Secretary, Linda S. Adams, Secretary of the Department of Food and Agriculture, A. G. Kawamura and Secretary of Resources Agency, Mike Crisman.

Lastly, and as a means of strengthening trade and social policy links, it was agreed to establish a trade commission between Mexico and California to analyze windows of opportunity and explore instruments that will permit the exchange of experiences to improve health and education services.
