Minutemen aren’t rednecks

Editor:

Ms. Natalia Garcia of Brownsville highlighted some interesting points in her July 29 letter. I take issue however, in her reference to us as “rednecks.

Please be advised that the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps is a coalition of nothing less than American citizens from all walks of life doing what our elected officials refuse to do. Our laws are perfectly clear and we must understand that illegal crossing of our borders is a federal offense and has always been; our government simply refuses to enforce it.

Clearly, when anyone enters our borders illegally, survival will demand breaking of more laws. False driver’s licenses, Social Security etc, are by and large their way of defrauding our system of virtually billions of dollars in benefits they’re not entitled to.

Countless ranchers have volunteered their lands for Minutemen to assume positions of observation points.

The Brown Berets have shown opposition to our arrival, perceiving threats to the Mexican American community. In fact, our cause is simply an illegal immigration issue.

Suffice it to say we do not patrol the borders. We simply observe, spot and report any illegal or suspicious activity to the authorities. Our mission remains unmoved, to secure our borders and continue to challenge our elected officials to serve and to protect American Citizens.
