ESCONDIDO (CNS) - A Murrieta man is suspected of killing his wife, an Escondido police officer, and attempting to burn down their house to cover up the crime, authorities reported Thursday.
Freddy Perez Rojas, 27, was arrested Wednesday night and booked into the Southwest Detention Center on suspicion of murder, arson and child endangerment in connection with the death of 25-year-old Laura Perez, an Escondido police officer.
"The Murrieta Police Department has worked closely with the Escondido Police Department from the start of this investigation," said Murrieta police Lt. Tony Conrad. "Our condolences go out to both Ms. Perez' immediate family, as well as her police family."
An Escondido police watch commander told City News Service the agency planned to release a statement of its own this afternoon.
Conrad alleged Rojas shot his wife in the chest during a domestic dispute sometime Wednesday in their house at 24562 Grand Oaks Court. She died at the scene, after which the suspect allegedly transported her body to a Moreno Valley storage locker.
Rojas then allegedly returned to the house and set fire to it, unsuccessfully attempting to burn it to the ground, according to police.
The couple's 4-year-old child was not harmed and is now in the care of extended family, Conrad said.

. . . Perez later admitted to shooting Laura, dumping her body in a storage locker in Morena Valley, then setting their home ablaze to cover up the evidence.
In court, prosecutors described what else detectives found inside that locker.
"There was upwards of $85,000 to $100,000 in that locker," a prosecutor said.
For that reason -- and the fact he has relatives in Guatemala -- prosecutors requested bail be set at $2 million, saying Perez is a flight risk. His court-appointed attorney, meanwhile, argued for half that, explaining that most of his family lives here, and he has a clean past.
"He has no criminal record. He's lived in the county for 18 years," his attorney said . . .

The first day they were saying he was from Mexico.
Now it looks like he is from Guatemala.
I don't know where he will be from tomorrow.Last edited by JohnDoe2; 07-25-2014 at 10:53 PM.
