A loud muffler led to the arrest of a man in possession of cocaine and fake Social Security cards, Round Lake Park police said.

Police Chief George Filenko said Martin G. Alvarez, 33, of the 500 block of Laurel Court in Round Lake Beach, was being held at the Lake County jail Thursday for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials.

Alvarez was charged with driving on a revoked license, no insurance, possession of a controlled substance, no muffler on vehicle and two counts of having altered identification.

Filenko said Officer Hector Lepe was on routine patrol about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday on Washington Street at Linden Drive in Round Lake Park when he heard the loud muffler on Alvarez's 1997 Volkswagen Jetta.

Lepe then found Alvarez possessing two Social Security cards with his name on them, but different numbers on each, said Filenko. He said investigators will contact the Social Security Administration.

Filenko said investigators believe Alvarez is an illegal immigrant, in part because of the bogus Social Security cards. He said one concern is Alvarez has used real Social Security numbers of U.S. citizens, who might face scrutiny from the Internal Revenue Service if he used the documentation to obtain jobs and didn't pay income taxes.

"We're furthering the investigation of those cards," said Filenko.

Filenko said an unspecified amount of cocaine was found in Alvarez's Jetta after it was towed to Round Lake Park police headquarters. He said the drug was detected by police dog Blade and his handler, Officer Tony Colon.

It's not known how Alvarez obtained an Illinois driver's license, police said.
