Some people honked in agreement while others showed nonverbal signs of disagreement as the Grand Island Chapter of the Nebraska Minutemen held a rally against illegal immigration on the corner of Webb Rd. and State St. on Friday.

The rally was intended to speak out against illegal immigration and the amnesty legislation currently pending in Congress. The Minutemen have held rallies at that intersection, which is city property, for the last two years when the weather is good. They have about one rally every month.

Friday the group was specifically protesting the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act of 2009. The DREAM Act was introduced in the United States Senate in March. Senator Richard Lugar (R-IN) was one of the senators who helped sponsor the DREAM Act bill - S.729. On his Senate website, Lugar says the bill, among other things, "would provide immigration relief to a select group of students and allow them to become permanent residents if they came to the United States as children (under the age of 16), are long-term U.S. residents (5 years or more), have good moral character, and attend an institution of higher learning or enlist in the military for at least two years."

The DREAM Act of 2009 is currently in committee, and has had no major action since it was introduced.
