NM-Protest Targets Gov.-Elect
Protest Targets Gov.-Elect
Albuquerque Journal
December 11, 2010
LAS CRUCES, NM
About 150 immigrants and supporters marched from a park to City Hall on Friday evening to express concerns about Gov.-elect Susana Martinez's plan to revoke driver's licenses granted to illegal immigrants.
The demonstration, organized by the Border Network for Human Rights, was timed to coincide with another march in El Paso held to protest proposed legislation in Texas aimed at getting tough on illegal immigrants.
Republican legislators in Texas have filed bills that will bar any state agency from printing documents in any language other than English, require applicants for driver's licenses to provide proof of U.S. citizenship, and heavily penalize businesses that hire illegal immigrants.
During her gubernatorial campaign, Martinez, the nation's first Latina governor, criticized her primary opponent for being soft on illegal immigration, and expressed sympathy for Arizona's controversial immigration law.
