A 32-year-old Cascade man charged last month for allegedly groping an 11-year-old girl is facing a new felony after authorities discovered he is in the country illegally.

Severiano Hernandez-Barrios, of 304-A Madison Ave., was charged Friday with identity theft for financial gain, which carries a maximum penalty of three years in prison. A criminal complaint said he was using someone else's Social Security number to work at an area farm. Hernandez-Barrios was charged with the crime after a detective got a tip about his immigration status during another investigation.

The complaint does not name the investigation, but the detective was also the lead investigator for Hernandez-Barrios' sexual assault case.

The complaint in that case, filed Sept. 22, says Hernandez-Barrios touched the girl inappropriately over her clothing once and tried to do so a second time before she moved away. The incident allegedly occurred when the two were alone together Sept. 19.

That charge is pending, along with an unrelated charge for allegedly punching a woman in the face and kneeing her in the stomach and groin during an argument Sept. 20.
