CA 10 Cars Impounded At Sobriety Checkpoint

Story Updated: Jan 1, 2011 at 7:01 PM PST

Authorities across the Tri Counties are keeping busy this weekend, making sure drivers aren't drunk behind the wheel.

Santa Maria Police Officers held a sobriety checkpoint last night on South Broadway Street. Over 800 cars passed through.
Despite it being New Year's Eve, only one driver was arrested for DUI.
10 vehicles were impounded they were all driven by illegal immigrants.

Santa Barbara Police Officers also tell KEY News the night was busy, but there were no major incidents to report.

A countywide crackdown on suspected impaired drivers has resulted in the arrests of 504 people during a two-week period that ended when the clock ticked into 2011, authorities announced Saturday.

The Winter Holiday Anti-DUI crackdown included 38 special deployments throughout Orange County, in addition to routine patrols, and involved the California Highway Patrol, the Orange County Sheriff's Department and police agencies.

Preliminary numbers show that 504 people were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs from 12:01 a.m. Friday, Dec. 17 through midnight Friday, Dec. 31, according to the Sheriff's Department.

No special DUI task forces were planned for Saturday, officials said. Collection of DUI arrest data will continue through midnight Sunday.
