Teenage Unemployment up to 25.5% !!!

Pity the unemployed, but especially pity the teenage unemployed.

According to today’s job report, the overall unemployment rate (the percentage of people in the labor force not working but looking for work) in August rose to 9.7 percent, its highest level in 26 years. The teenage unemployment rate, however, is at 25.5 percent, its highest level since the Bureau of Labor Statistics began keeping track of such data in 1948.

Take a look at the chart below, which shows seasonally adjusted unemployment rates for teenagers (workers 16 to 19), nonteenagers (20 or older) and older workers (55 or older). You’ll see that teenage unemployment has always topped the other two, but it has been especially bad in this recession:

Of course, teenagers are likely to have fewer financial obligations than their older counterparts. But in a job market where older workers are expected to continue postponing retirement a little longer, the outlook still isn’t good for young Americans desperate for the work openings that typical turnover and attrition can offer.

Hmmm... wonder where all the traditional teenage jobs are? Hmmm?
Just because you're used to something doesn't make it right.

In my area, teens are competing with illegals for jobs, especially those usually worked during the summer months - landscaping, fast food, Great America. One of the local McDonald's requires U.S. teens to be bilingual but the illegal kitchen staff may speak only Spanish.

Jobs for Obama's Acorn, La Raza, Union and SI friends.

Yes, we can see how helpful the Stimuls bill has been for our people in this economy. Not helpful at all. Sorry, Biden, the American people aren't buying it.

    This is done on purpose!
The USA brings in 168,000 visa people from India and other 3rd world countries to take their jobs!
The Obama Regime wants teens to have no jobs so they will sign up for AmeriCorps (Obama's personal corrupt Youth Army like Hitler had!)
He WANTED to recruit kids or indoctrinate them into the Army idea.
We have stopped that by exposing it.
Why would he be changing his speech now?
Do NOT let this LIAR Near your kids!!! KEEP THEM HOME TUESDAY!!!!

Maybe teens will start taking more pride in their jobs in order to keep them.

I don't know what part of the country you are from but teens here in Texas have always taken pride in their jobs. I worked at a pizza place in high school and I loved that job! It paid for my car and insurance, plus a little spending money. Go down to your local Game Stop and tell me those teens don't like that job. Despite the economy, Game Stop continues to hire and keeps growing.

Actually, Dallas teens are still getting lots of jobs. Even though I, as an adult, can't get a job that can pay my bills (I've been looking for months and I'm well educated and over qualified for most of the jobs I've been applying for), the teens are having no problem getting minimum wage jobs. I'm contact with a lot of high school seniors all the time, and a ton of them are employed (especially seniors through their schools work program).

So at least in our area, American teens are still getting jobs!!

ReggieMay, I absolutely believe what you said is true. How completely offensive is that? My family's been here for many generations and now we have to learn another language to get a job? Bizarro America is alive and well…

I feel really bad for the legal immigrants who come from non-Spanish speaking countries. They’re doubly screwed.
I would never be so arrogant as to move to another country and expect them to change for me.

Southern California. If they aren't on the cell, they are texting, if they aren't texting, they are online. Customer service went out the window a long time ago...especially with the teens.
