APPLETON, WISCONSIN — A 20-year-old Appleton man was arrested Tuesday in connection with a hit-and-run involving a pedestrian crossing Lawe Street.

Police Sgt. Pat DeWall said the driver was eastbound on College Avenue, making a left turn onto Lawe about noon when a 45-year-old woman stepped out on a "don't walk" flashing signal and began to cross.

Officers said the man did not see the woman until the last second.

"He knew the vehicle hit her but didn't see her, so he assumed she was OK and he continued on his way," DeWall said.

Police say a witness, who followed the vehicle, helped police locate the driver.

The woman received lacerations and had pain in her wrists, especially the left one. It was unknown if she was taken to a hospital.

Police said the man did not have valid driver's license. He presented one from Mexico, which police determined was a counterfeit.
