Rep. Steve Kagen's trip to U.S. - Mexican border

Rep. Steve Kagen describes this photo from his recent trip to the United States-Mexico border: "This picture was taken in El Paso at one of the narrowest sections of the border between the U.S. and Mexico. One can easily walk across the Rio Grande at this point, where the border is monitored by armed Border Patrol Agents 24 hours daily. The individuals huddled together in the sewer outlet are moments away from trying to jump the border, and others were sitting just to the left of this photo." Submitted Dec 3, 2007

Rep. Steve Kagen describes this photo from his recent trip to the United States-Mexico border: "This is where officiers would park their patrol cars under the shade of the metal roof and behind the glass shield, which is riddled with marks made by bullets and rocks. This glass shield faces the river and is no more than 20 yards from the Rio Grande River." Submitted Dec 3, 2007

Rep. Steve Kagen describes this photo from his recent trip to the United States-Mexico border: "Border Patrol Agent Demetrio gave me a private tour of the border separating 2 million Mexican citizens across the Rio Grande from the 700,000 U.S. citizens in El Paso. Demetrio is standing in Texas at the U.S. Border Monument Number 1. Immediately behind him is New Mexico and to his right is Mexico. These Border Monuments begin here and extend all the way to the Pacific Ocean in California. Behind me, the Rio Grande acts as the border between the U.S. and Mexico. Citizens from Mexico and the U.S. come to this Monument area to meet one another, for you can literally reach across the border at this remote park area, which is constatntly monitored by U.S. Border Control agents." Submitted Dec. 3, 2007.

Rep. Steve Kagen describes this photo from his recent trip to the United States-Mexico border: "This image was taken at the end of the fence line, several yards from the glass shield. The waters of the Rio Grande travel in a narrow cement channel that then runs underneath the city of El Paso. During high water periods, Demetrio, a Border Patrol agent who gave me a tour, said he has seen border jumpers drown as they were unable to climb out of the culverts before being pulled under." Submitted Dec 3, 2007.

Rep. Steve Kagen describes this photo from his recent trip to the United States-Mexico border: "Shortly after Demetrio and I arrived at the fence, two patrol cars sped to greet us, as we had tripped the motion detectors located in the ground nearby. The children also arrived, and begged for money." Submitted Dec. 3, 2007
