I've seen some crazy stuff,
but this takes the cake

One of the biggest and most important seed banks in the world is at risk of being replaced by a private housing development.

The facility near the Russian city of St Petersburg houses thousands of varieties of plants, not found anywhere else in the world.

During World War II Russian plant scientists literally starved rather than save themselves by eating the seeds in this seed bank during a brutal multi-month siege by the Nazis.

To my mind, this was one of the greatest demonstrations of human nobility in history.

Now this one of a kind, irreplaceable collection of living genetic material is going to be destroyed for condo?

They've got to be kidding.

During the Nazi siege of Leningrad during World War II,
Russian plant scientists literally starved rather than eat
the seeds in the collection.

Now a real estate developer has plants to bulldoze one
of the most important living collections of plant material
on earth -to build condos.
