Voters Still Trust GOP More on Most Key Issues
    Friday, July 02, 2010

Voters trust Republicans more than Democrats on nine out of 10 key issues regularly tracked by Rasmussen Reports.

The latest national telephone survey of Likely Voters shows voters trust Republicans more by a 48% to 39% margin on the economy, an issue that has consistently been the most important among voters for several years.

Republicans have held the advantage on the economy since May of last year.

Democrats still hold a slight edge over the GOP on another top issue, government ethics and corruption. While 33% of voters trust Democrats more on these issues, 29% trust Republicans more. However, the plurality (38%) is not sure which party to trust more. Democrats have held modest leads on the issue for five months after the parties were tied in January.

Government ethics has twice edged out the economy in the past two years in terms of importance among voters.

However, a Rasmussen video report shows that 40% of voters see the Obama administration as being less ethical than past administrations.

More than 50% of voters nationwide trust the GOP more on the issues of national security, taxes and health care.

Two surveys of 1,000 Likely Voters were conducted on June 23-24 and June 29-30, 2010 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC.

The issue of health care was one Democrats held big advantages on for several years until the health care reform debate that began last year. The parties were tied on the issue in September and Republicans have taken the lead in all surveys conducted since.

Most voters still favor repeal of the national health care bill, but support for repeal has fallen to its lowest level since the bill passed in March. Voters remain skeptical, however, about the impact of the plan on the deficit and on the quality and cost of health care.

Republicans now hold a 47% to 32% edge on immigration, their largest lead since January. Still, neither party has garnered trust on this issue from the majority of voters nationwide in over two years of regular tracking. Last month, Republicans led Democrats by just three points on the issue.

The Obama administration has reportedly decided to challenge Arizona’s new immigration law in federal court, but 56% of U.S. voters oppose such a challenge.

The parties remain close on the issue of education, with the GOP holding a statistically insignificant 43% to 41% edge. Both parties have held very modest leads on this issue for the past several months.

Republican candidates now hold a six-point lead over Democrats on the Generic Congressional Ballot for the week ending Sunday, June 27.
