It has been a month since Governor Jan Brewer signed SB 1070, the controversial immigration bill, into law. On July 29th, that bill will take effect. Over the past month the bill has been all over the news, locally and nationally. Arizona has endured boycotts and similar threats from municipalities such as Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Even though it was only signed a month ago it has already been amended to make specific modifications partially brought on by public outcry. The most notable of the changes is the inclusion of language which explicitly specifies that race, color, or national origin can not be used as criteria for demanding proof of immigration documentation.

With a month to digest the bill, talk about it with your friends and neighbors and read/watch it on news, has your opinion of the bill changed?

Do you support SB 1070? Do you oppose SB 1070? Will the boycotts cause more problems than the bill will solve, or are they just empty threats?

You can read the full text of the bill, including the amendments from HB 2162, here.

The following are brief summaries of some of the crucial oft-discussed passages. For the full text of the bill click the link above to the entire document.

ARS 11-1051 - During the course of a lawful stop, when practicable, law enforcement has the right to inquire about your immigration status if they have reasonable suspicion that you are an in the US illegally, but race, color, or national origin cannot be grounds for that suspicion.

ARS 13-1509 - This passage largely mirrors existing national laws. It makes it a state misdemeanor with a maximum $100 fine including jail time to not carry and complete immigration documentation mandated by United States laws 1304(e) and 1306(a).

The bill also includes passages about employing illegal immigrants, transporting illegal immigrants, and other issues.
