    LULAC wants city to ignore districting advice

    LEAGUE CITY — The League of United Latin American Citizens has asked the city council to disregard a recommendation from the city’s charter review committee against creating single-member voting districts.

    The league also asked the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division to investigate the committee’s process and evaluate the need for districts.

    Single-member districts divide the city so neighborhoods elect representatives to the council. Now, all council members represent the city at large.

    The council is set to decide whether to put the issue before voters in October when the committee presents its recommendation.

    In a letter dated Monday, LULAC officials said League City’s culturally and economically diverse population — which they estimated is 15 percent Hispanic — isn’t fairly represented on the council.

    “You have the responsibility to expand the representation on the city council to all areas of League City, not only the east side of the city, more specifically the South Shore Harbour area,â€

    LULAC wants to control the city. Right now, the situation is fair to everyone in the city but LULAC wants more influence than they deserve.
