Rocky Mountain News

Two men were arrested Tuesday night after shots were fired at an unmarked police car and their SUV plowed through fences, a tree and an electrical box during an Aurora chase.

Two undercover officers were in an unmarked car near East First Avenue and Lansing Street about 9:45 p.m. when the suspects drove past them, eastbound on First Avenue, Aurora police Detective Shannon Lucy said in a press statement.

As the officers attempted to get the SUV's license plate number, they heard multiple gunshots directed at their vehicle.

Fellow officers in marked patrol cars soon spotted the SUV eastbound on East Mississippi Avenue near I-225, and initiated a pursuit.

Officers attempted to ram the SUV, which crashed through a wood fence into the back yard of a home at South Norfolk Street and East Mississippi Avenue.

When officers attempted to order the driver out of the SUV, he backed onto Mississippi, going westbound in reverse, Lucy said.

A marked patrol car then came nose to nose with the suspect vehicle. The SUV smashed into an electrical box, causing a small fire, and toppled a tree into the roadway.

The SUV then slammed through another fence near South Kalispell Street, where it was pinned in by a patrol car, Lucy said.

The SUV driver, whom police believe fired the gunshots, was identified as Manuel Adrian Diaz, 30. He is being held at the Aurora City Jail on two outstanding warrants and faces several charges for Tuesday night's incident, including attempted second-degree murder.

The other man, 18-year-old Lorenzo Jesus Torres, is being held on two warrants for failing to appear in court.
Two women in the SUV also were taken into the custody.
Lucy said officers recovered a handgun in the back yard of the home on South Norfolk Street.

Two officers and one passenger in the SUV were taken to a local hospital and treated for minor injuries.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Barry Cape at 303-739-6947.
