At a sobriety checkpoint in Chula Vista Friday night, police made two arrests for driving under the influence. Officers also impounded 27 vehicles and issued 15 citations for various vehicle code violations.

Some 2,000 vehicles drove through the checkpoint on the 600 block of E Street from 7 p.m. Friday to 1 a.m. Saturday, Chula Vista Police said. Nearly half of the drivers were flagged by officers and seven were evaluated for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. At the checkpoint, 17 drivers were driving on a suspended license and 15 were driving without a license.
The traffic operation was part of the police department’s ongoing effort to keep the roads safe and discourage anyone from getting behind the wheel while intoxicated. The checkpoint was funded, in part, with a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
