3,000 line up for CTA driver jobs

An estimated 3,000 people stood in line around Chicago Transit Authority headquarters Saturday, all hoping for a part-time job as a bus driver.
The size of the crowd caught CTA officials off guard.
"We tried to get the word to everyone that they could leave resumes with us, that they didn't have to stand in line because we would be contacting people," CTA spokeswoman Wanda Taylor said. She added that there were 600 part-time bus-driver spots open, but that applications for employment in other jobs also were collected.
CTA employees worked their way up and down the sidewalk taking resumes and shouting instructions, but some applicants who said they had been in line for as long as six hours complained that there was a lack of information.
Shareese Rivers, 38, said late Saturday morning that she had been in line since 5 a.m., three hours before the doors opened.
Melody Brown, 36, of Chicago held a CTA flier in her hand outlining required documents, but there was no mention of a commercial driver's license, a requirement for bus drivers.
