If enough people receive this, maybe a seed of awareness will be
    planted
and maybe changes will evolve Maybe not, some Democrats are awfully
    sure of whatisn't so.

    But it's worth a try.
How many people can YOU send this to?

Believe it or not, participation in Social Security is still voluntary. You may get some disinformation or meet with resistance if you try to call the SSA to confirm this, but if pressed they will admit it. I even have a letter from the SSA saying that whether you provide an SSN to your employer is strictly a matter between you and your employer.

One of the tricks used to coerce the employers into demanding the provision of a number that is wholly voluntary is to point to provisions that require that a person who actually has an SSN to provide it. As the law is written, the employer is required to ask for it (so that they may properly report payments into the system by those who are participants). The law is silent as to any requirement for the employee or prospective employee to provide one, and is also silent as to any requirement for a non-participant in the program who has no SSN.

Another promise made by FDR to Congress was that the SSN would never become a federal ID number. To insure this promise was not broken, all SSNs used to carry a boldface disclaimer saying "NOT TO BE USED FOR INDENTIFICATION." If you have an old SSN from before 1986, you will note this disclaimer. In an attempt to coerce more citizens to entrap their children at an early age, tax law was changed in 1986 to disallow the claiming of any dependent over the age of five who did not have an SSN. Today they are issued at birth by most hospitals and are required for everything from school enrollment to drivers licenses. We have gone from a voluntary system in which adults made their informed decision to participate to an all-but mandatory de facto federal ID without which it is getting increasingly difficult to buy or sell. Hmmm... What does that make me think of?
