    They knew

    They knew it was coming and did nothing to try and stop it, on purpose. They wanted the U S to be attacked so as to get more involved in the Middle East to protect Israel and to kill Muslims for them. They were getting beat up too much and were bearing the brunt of islamic anger and hatred.
