GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) -- In order to become a permanent, legal resident of the U.S., immigrants now must receive a vaccine that is not required of U.S. citizens.

The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine -- known as Gardasil -- is one of five the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services recently added to the required list. The vaccine works to prevent cervical cancer, the leading cause of cancer death in women worldwide.

Ginky-Lee Torres, an immigration lawyer, questions the government's decision to impose requirements on immigrants that go above and beyond those on citizens.

"If the government is trying to take care of everyone, they should be doing it also with the citizens," she said. "However, they don't have the power to impose on you as a citizen what vaccination you have."

Immigrans must also get vaccines that protect against meningitis and chicken pox, which are highly contagious. HPV is not.

Nya Flomo, who works with refugees, says the requirement is aimed at protecting women who come from countries where access to the vaccine is limited or nonexistent.

At $162 per dose, the three-dose vaccine is expensive. "It's a financial burden, in addition to every other burden they have financially in the applications," said Torres.

I guess we'll be hearing from the ACLU on this in the very near future.

    HPV Vaccines

I assuming that by now most of you have heard about a new drug on the market called Gardisil. There has been a recent flourish of commercials and advertisements promoting this drug as a vaccine against cervical cancer or HPV. The drug is targeted at young women from an age as early as nine years old and there have been recent discussions about making this vaccine mandatory for grade eight girls.

I am writing you today to let you know that the truth behind this vaccine isn't as safe or necessary as the media is implying. First of all, Gardisil is not a vaccine against cervical cancer. The drug actually protects against 4 out of 127 strands of a virus called HPV. In other words Gardisil only protects against 3.15% of known strands of HPV. 3.15%!!!! Also, HPV is not cervical cancer but a sexually transmitted virus that can lead to cervical cancer. If a woman is infected with HPV, cervical cancer is a risk but not a necessary outcome of this virus. With regular check-ups and a healthy lifestyle, cervical cancer is avoidable and treatable, especially if caught early.

Secondly, Gardisil is a new drug being manufactured by a drug corporation known as MERK & co. MERK& co. does not have a reputable track record. In the 1990's MERK & co. released a pain killer known as Vioxx which they later withdrew from the market due the to health risks it had caused after making over 2 billion dollars in revenue. Over 20 billion prescriptions of Vioxx had already been issued. Gardisil is seeming to be a similar situation. As of July 2008, over 9,800 adverse reactions to Gardisil have been reported. These reactions have been described to include paralysis, lesions and rectal bleeding among other things. 20 deaths have also been reported and yet somehow this remains unrecognized as an issue of concern.

This makes me really wonder about the present restrictions on the release of new drugs. Although this drug may appear to be safe in initial testing, there is no telling what long term effects may be. You should also consider the agenda of the corporation that is pushing for the release of a new drug in the attempt to make billions of dollars. It is expected that by the end of 2008, MERK & co. will have already made roughly 4 billion dollars off of Gardisil sales. I think it is also important to mention that Gardisil is the first genetically altered drug to hit the market.

I find it extremely disturbing that this is happening and no one is doing anything about it. Just because something is being advertised does not mean that the product being sold to you is safe or necessary. Please be aware of the fact that advertisements and media campaigns are made to sell you something. The corporations funding these campaigns are not interested in your health but their own pockets. I find it sickening that MERK & co. is manipulating people into thinking that they are paying good money to 'protect' themselves against a false pandemic that they are creating through the media. Yes, there has been a recent outbreak of HPV and the number of people with this virus is alarming. However, the fact that a corporation is creating fear through the media to sell a product that may cause more harm to your health than the actual virus itself is an outright crime!

I saw an ad today on the TTC as I was on my way home from work that was for Gardisil. This ad flat out stated that HPV IS the cause of cervical cancer. This is not entirely true. Cervical cancer, like any cancer is caused by the development of abnormal cells. HPV can be a contributing factor to the development of abnormal cells that may lead to cervical cancer. It also said that 3 out of 4 people WILL get HPV. This is also not true. You will only contract HPV is you sleep with someone who is infected. Men currently are not even tested for HPV and remain silent carriers of the virus that is not a threat to them. A possible preventative measure to help control the HPV virus would be to start testing men for this virus. Is this not obvious?

I have also read recently that Gardisil is now recommended for young boys as a vaccine against throat cancer. (How convenient for MERK & co.) The ad was claiming that boys can get throat cancer as a result of having oral sex with a HPV infected female. I don't know about you but this seems like an obvious attempt for MERK & co. to double their sales.

If this concerns you (which I hope it does) please spread the word. If you know anyone who is thinking about taking the Gardisil vaccine, simply ask them to do their research. There is more information on the dangers of Gardisil on the internet than praises about it.

Welcome Moi! And I have always thought the best way to stay healthy these days is too keep as far away from doctors as possible, especially those that love to prescribe pills for even hangnails.
Forgive my foggy memory, but wasn't there a couple of school districts demanding Gardasil for all their female students? While I remembering rioting about it at the time, I have no recollection of the outcome.

My friends niece lives with her and the girl was set up with a computer at home to complete her education. The new school REQUIRED her to get the gardisil vaccine.

My concern is, cervical cancer is not contagious, the girl was not attending a school building and that there is no data on the long term effects of the vaccine. The cure may be worse than the disease.

I furnished her with as much information as I could so that they could make an informed decision. The girl got the vaccine because "all her friends got it."
