Manchester United Recruits 9-Year-Old Standout After Watching Him on YouTube
    Friday, August 03, 2007

Nine-year-old Rhain Davis has been recruited by Manchester United after team scouts saw him perform in a YouTube video.

MANCHESTER, England — Manchester United has recruited a 9-year-old soccer prodigy based on video footage featuring his skills.

The club brought in Rhain Davis after his grandfather sent a DVD to United youth staff showing the boy playing for an under-10 team in Brisbane, Australia.

"Manchester United is proud of its history of developing talented young players, and invests considerable time and resources into trying to find the best young players of the future," the club said in a statement.

In Davis' case, however, United need only have invested four minutes. That is the length of a YouTube clip featuring Davis's dribbling, stepover and goal-scoring skills -- viewed more than 800,000 times on the site -- that has led fans to describe him as the next Wayne Rooney.

The club has downplayed such hype, pointing out that it recruits about 40 players of Davis' age every year, and that Davis' status with the club will be subject to the same annual review as any other youth player.

Davis has moved to England and is training with a United youth squad.

"Being here has been brilliant," The Sun newspaper quoted Davis as saying. "The best part has been meeting a lot of the players, like Wayne Rooney."

Davis was born in England and has a British passport. His grandfather lives in England.

Excellent video. I have recently heard 2 sports stories recently that really showed God's perfection through our children.

One was a high school basketball player who lost his mother on the day of his game. This kid actually went from the hospital where his mom died, straight to the game. His coach let him in the game, but he accidentally drew a foul from the opposing team. The other team knew about the kids recent loss. They argued with the refs that they didn't want the foul, and to just dismiss it. The refs refused. The kid on the opposing team went to the free throw line to take his two shots, and he knew what he had to do. He took his shots, and "missed" both of them.

The other story is about a juvenile correction center here in Texas that has a football team. These kids' parents have pretty much written them off, so the parent never came to see them play. One Friday they were scheduled to play a Christian school in Grapevine, Texas. The coach of the Christian school informed the players and parent that would be attending to please root for the other team. Upon running onto the field, the corrections team was given a standing ovation from the opposing team, and throughout the game were given the cheers and support that their parents were not good enough to show. At the end, even though the corrections team lost, they were brought to tears by the support. I believe Dale Hansen on WFAA aired this story.
