Colgate in Mexico
Colgate quiet on layoffs, plant site
In October 2005, Colgate announced that the factory would be closing by Jan. 1, 2008, leaving about 500 people without a job. State and local officials tried to entice Colgate to relocate a scaled-down version of the plant in Clark County, but the company ultimately chose to build in Morristown, Tenn. The remainder of the work done in Clarksville will be moved to Mexico.

As sad as this is, I' rather the Mexicans be doing this work IN Mexico.
Just because you're used to something doesn't make it right.

This is really bad news around here. These were good Union jobs with good pay and benefits.
The move started in the mid-90's. Non-union and more international Proctor and Gamble was the low cost producer and something had to give. Some production could be done in Mexico, but health concerns of FDA products kept some here. A Union guy told me Colgate had to shower and issue paper suits to the workforce down there. There were some concerns about the water quality too.
My X worked at the Clark Co. plant. Colgate gave older workers, which included her, a buy out on their job and a way to pay up their medical. They tried to do the right thing by those workers and should get credit. The younger workers got to remain and work into retirement, and others will have a better severance package. Some are still going to be badly hurt.
The Colgate plant is very old. There's a civil war prison in the basement. There is just no way Colgate can remain here with the Union and not take advantage of the Mexican workforce in 'right to work"(for nothing) TN. I think people in this company cared about the people, but the pressure from investors that don't care (not saying they should) forced this move. All that matters these days is ROI. That's just the way capitalism works.
I will not boycott Colgate.Unemployment is not working. Deport illegal alien workers now! Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)
