This occured almost exactly at the same time the Phoenix police officer was killed. Tempe and Phoenix share jurisdictional borders. Yesterday morning the news was reporting the description of the suspect as a heavy set Hispanic male. Today now that she has died they have taken out any mention of the suspects race. This happened about 100 yards away from the ASU Police Headquarters.

The Tempe woman who was dragged alongside a moving vehicle after the driver attempted to steal her purse died in the hospital Wednesday night.

Kyleigh Sousa, a 21-year-old ASU student, was approached by a heavy-set man in a silver Chrysler 300 at about 2 a.m. Wednesday in the 200 block of East Apache Boulevard, said Sgt. Steven Carbajal of the Tempe Police Department.

The man apparently grabbed her purse and drove away. Sousa did not let go, however, and she was dragged a short distance before falling to the ground. The man fled in the car.

Sousa was taken to the hospital in critical condition and was pronounced dead at 9:30 p.m., Carbajal said.

The Tempe Police Department is searching for the man responsible and asking for the public's help. Anyone with information is encouraged to call police at 480-350-8311 or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS.
