Here’s a story from the “You just can’t make this stuff up” department.

Action News reported Friday that five Philadelphia narcotics officers are suspected of breaking into a home. According to the story, the break-in occurred in the Kensington section of the city at around 8 pm on October 23. The officers allegedly broke in through a window when nobody was home.

While Kensington is a drug-ridden area of the city, the officers reportedly did not have a warrant and did not find any drugs on the scene. In other words, they were (at best) action on mere suspicion in violation of the law.

Here’s the kicker: For their troubles, the officers allegedly stole a teenage occupant’s Police Explorers uniform. That’s her uniform for the Philadelphia Police Explorer Cadet program, which trains people ages 14-20 who are interested in a law enforcement career.

Meanwhile, the officers have been assigned to desk duty pending further review by the police commissioner.

If there’s one bright spot to this story, it’s that a teenage girl was able to learn about the kind of people she might work with if she joins the Philadelphia Police Department. Maybe she’ll reconsider her career ambitions…or at least think about joining a different police force.
