FEMA has approved more than $664 million for victims of Superstorm Sandy in New York state, with about $390 million of that coming to the five boroughs, the agency announced Sunday.
Since the superstorm hit, FEMA has conducted about 131,000 home inspections, and some 230,000 New Yorkers have reached out seeking aid or information, FEMA said.
Meanwhile, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Sunday that the state will get a $27 million federal grant to assist with Sandy cleanup.
Through the grant, the state will hire some 5,000 unemployed people to work on relief efforts all over the state. The jobs would pay about $15 per hour, and people must be unemployed to apply.
"The enormous amount of work to be done gives us a chance to provide young and unemployed New Yorkers with job opportunities cleaning up their communities," Cuomo said.
