Serbs riot to protest stealing of Kosovo by U.S.

150,000 Serbs protest Kosovo's declaration of independence, break into embassy

Associated Press - February 21, 2008 1:53 PM ET

BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) - Serb rioters have broken into the U.S. Embassy in Belgrade.

They've set fire to an office there.

The episode follows a massive protest in the streets of Belgrade against Kosovo's independence. An estimated 150,000 people took part.

After the protest, attackers wearing masks broke into the embassy building, which has been closed this week. They tried to throw furniture from an office. A fire broke out inside 1 of the offices.

Riot police drove armored jeeps down the street and fired tear gas to clear the crowd.

The U.S. State Department is calling on the Serbian government to protect the embassy. A spokesman says the U.S. ambassador is in contact with U.S. officials from home.
