Emergency jury duty leaves people stunned, calling their bosses

GREELEY – They roamed the streets of Greeley Wednesday morning with stacks of paper and an eye out for people they could summon to emergency jury duty.

Weld County and District Court staff handed subpoenas to more than 50 unsuspecting people, telling them they had to report for jury duty Wednesday morning because many of those summoned by mail did not show.

Some of the people were just walking around town. Rosalee Rice was at the Post Office.

"It's been one heck of a morning," says Rice, who had to call her boss at Colorado Pain and Rehabilitation with the news.

Her initial ire rose when she found out the on-the-spot court order was needed because less than 40 of the 200 people summoned to court by mail turned out.

"As a resident, if you are summoned to go, you should go because it really interrupts everyone else's lives," she said.

Court administrators agree, adding there were trials that were ready to start, but were still in need of a jury.

They say this is the third time in the last two months they've had to take such extreme action. Before December, they believe it had not happened in 15 years.

Judges and administrators will be meeting to discuss what to do with all those no-shows.

Just say something like, "Great, I've always wanted to send somebody to the "Chair."" That should do it!

Viewer reminder: I would be remiss in not reminding folks that Greeley is notable in that the local Swift plant had a very highly publicized ICE raid.

A google search using keywords: 'greeley, colorado,ICE,raids' turns up ample evidence of the event...

Are the people on that jury pool list 'voters', 'citizens' or .... <something other>???

Summoning people to jury duty would be a great way to discover the extent of fraudulent voter registration. Often, illegally registered "voters" will seek very hard to get out of this legal requirement. They are probably not even going to understand the deliberations in the courtroom nor effectively interact with their peers anyway. This exposes them very quickly.

If I were the registrar I would even start profiling based upon surnames---and "rights" groups would file protests. It would be great to see how much corruption this would expose. They could simply send out questionnaires to registered voters to get things started.

Yeah, who knows where they got the names? I'm on the border of Arapahoe and Adams county in Colorado, just inside Arapahoe county, and I and my daughter have gotten several jury summonses from Adams county. We don't vote or own property in Adams county. I'll bet some of the no-shows are no-showing for a reason.

Perhaps those summoned don't speak English.
