Over 2,000 Moroccan Seasonal Workers Hired in Spain in 2016

RABAT – More than 2,000 Moroccan seasonal workers have been hired to work in Spain in 2016, Moroccan Minister of Expatriates and Migration Affairs Anis Birou said on Wednesday.

In a parliamentary session, Birou said the contracts of 2,096 Moroccans workers were renewed in 2016 in Spain, according to the Moroccan official news agency MAP.

He explained that recruitment of Moroccans, who harvest strawberries, has been developed according to the agreement signed between Morocco and Spain in July 2001, as this deal guarantees the same working conditions, wages and social coverage for Moroccans as their Spanish counterparts.

Birou underlined that his department launched a mechanism for monitoring and evaluating the situation of Moroccan seasonal workers in Spain.

The minister pointed out that this mechanism includes holding regular meetings between officials and workers, especially in the Spanish town of Cartaya, where large numbers of Moroccans work in harvesting strawberries.
