ELKHART, Indiana (CNN) -- A gunman apparently shot one person before abducting four children and their mother, Elkhart police said Saturday.

The children, ages 9, 8, 6 and 16 months, were believed to have been abducted by 30-year-old Jerry D. White, according to an Amber Alert issued by Elkhart police.

The children's mother was identified as 31-year-old Kimberly Walker

"The children were last seen at 11:27 a.m. EST ... and are believed to be in extreme danger," the alert said.

Police said the wounded man had life-threatening injuries, The Associated Press reported.

Details of the shooting and abductions were not immediately available.

Police said White was driving either a red 2000 Dodge Intrepid with Illinois license plate 9613090 or a 1993 beige Saturn with Indiana license plate 20T1089.
