UVSC student ruled mentally competent

A Utah Valley State College student who allegedly gave false background information while buying four assault rifles was ruled mentally competent on Thursday by a 4th District judge. Prosecutors had requested an evaluation of Kidus Chane Yohannes because he is purportedly "consumed with violent depictions of the death of United States military servicemen, as well as human execution by gunfire."

Yohannes, 20, also made statements about killing a police officer, court documents allege. He is charged with four counts of providing false background check information and one count of possessing a stolen credit card. All the charges are third-degree felonies. The charges allege Yohannes, an Ethiopian refugee who is a permanent U.S. resident, gave a fictitious alien registration number on a background check application when he bought the weapons.
