Schwarzenegger wants 9.25% sales tax in O.C.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger today announced a financial rescue package for the state government that includes a 1.5 percentage point hike in the state retail tax that would take Orange County’s sales tax rate to 9.25%. (The state would get 6.5%.) The fresh cash is needed to backfill an $11 billion deficit in this year’s budget

Overall, Arnold is proposing $4.5 billion in difficult cuts and $4.4 billion in new revenues for the current year budget. He called a special session of the legislature to handle the funding crisis.

According to the governor’s plan, the higher sales tax would end in three years. Other planned tax hikes:

Sales tax applies to the repair of appliance, furniture and vehicles plus golf and veterinarian services. One Orange County vet called it “devastatingâ€

Relaxing some state labor regulations dealing with meal and rest periods, overtime exemptions and work schedules.
How will relaxing labor laws regarding breaks save the state money? Meal breaks are not paid for by the employer anyway. What do they mean they will relax regulations regarding rest periods? Does this mean they will be eliminated? They are only 10 minutes as it is. Are they going to be 5 minutes? How will this save money for the State of California? What does it mean that they will relax regulations regarding overtime exemptions? Does it mean that people wont get paid for overtime?

Your right. Employers do not currently pay for rest periods. thus, if they are "relaxed" which I take to mean, extended, that will be less time on the clock that employers will have to compensate employees.

Overtime will be reduced to further tighten the belt (which is actually not a bad idea given the tremendous abuse of OT by some state employees). Of course, Arnold's grand plan will most likely be implemented on city, county and state employees.

All this and yet Arnold refuses to cut off the illegal invaders. That's the outrage here. I would have no problems with these cut backs, reductions, etc., but for the fact the only people seemingly being asked to tighten their belts are those who are citizens, while illegal invaders continue to remain on full scholarship!! That's the outrage!
