General Dynamics-NASSCO has received an $18.3 million contract to perform repairs and upgrades on the San Diego-based amphibious assault ship Makin Island. The Defense Department says the work will be completed by next May. The Makin Island returned from her maiden deployment in June, and such repairs are normal. The ship is known as a "Harrier carrier" because it carries Harrier jets, in addition to helicopters.

Respected maritime blogger Tim Colton reports that NASSCO is still among the companies that are seeking the right to build new cutters for the Coast Guard.
