The thing is its not a private industry.... its a public industry. Private sector does the work and gets the pay but its the government paying. This is one of the major problems you run into when you play in the middle of private and public sector.

The problem is the private sectors prices and how they manage stuff costs 4x as much as it could being ran by a strict public sector. As money for medicare is not infinate it needs to stay within its budget which is already many times over the 3% paid in over a working persons lifetime.

Its a real horrible way to look at it but in a way its simply triage. You have the money to either keep a dieing elderly alive 6 more months or the same money can go towards life saving treatment for multiple children and young adults. There is not the money for both simple as that. So if given a choice who do you choose? A 13 year old? A 30 year old? Or an 80 year old?

Their is a solution however, private health insurance. If these elderly want above and beyond treatment they can have private health insurance. Yes it costs more, thats simply because elderly costs are insanely high. The other solution is family.

What happened to back when family looked out for their loved ones? When people had to take personal responsibility? What would happen if it was passed that Medicare could NOT exceed the yearly 3% intake from workers and employers from the previous year? Come May the budget is already dry. Should everyone else have to fork over even more to pay the difference? 5% 10% 20%?

Studies have already said that Medicare alone will consume half of our national budget within a matter of years. Within 15-20 years it will consume the entire budget.

Now this is the problem with our country. We have lost personal and family responsibility. We are a land of entitlements and don't ever want to talk about the entitlements that WE ourselves get. End entitlements!... as long as its not MY entitlement is how Americans are acting.

Just look for a moment how many veterans the VA Medical system manages each year and their cost. Many of these are the real bad cases, showing the extremes in healthcare use... and it costs far far less then medicare on a per patient type accounting.
